University of Würzburg, Germany:
**********************************************************************************************************
PhD position in honeybee development (SFB 1047):***
*"Developmental timing mechanisms during the formation of the compound
eye in the honeybee worker, queen and drone"**
************************************************************************************************************
*Rationale**
*A fundamental challenge in honeybee biology is to understand the timing
of developmental programmes leading to specific morphological and
physiological characteristics of the castes and sexes. This PhD project
aims to characterize the developmental mechanisms that pattern the
compound eye of the honeybee worker, queen and drone. In the framework
of the recently approved, DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre 1047
on "Insect timing: mechanisms, plasticity and interactions" we offer a
PhD position in honeybee eye development. The successful candidate will
perform experiments to identify the factors that determine the
spatio-temporal expression of the three opsins forming the
light-sensitive part of the compound eye. The PhD positions will be
located at the University of Würzburg, Germany
(http://www.zoo2.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de/startseite/).
*Requirements**
*Applicants should have a Master or Diploma degree in Biology,
Neurosciences, Molecular Biology or a related discipline, a solid
background in molecular and/or developmental biology and preferentially
research experience in one or more of the following areas: molecular
genetics, immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, neuroanatomy. A
strong interest in insect development and behaviour is an important
prerequisite.
*Salary and conditions**
*Salary and benefits are according to public service positions in
Germany (TVL 13 - 65%, net income per month is ca. 1300 €). Start date:
1st April 2013 (negotiable). The position is for three years. The
doctoral thesis will be done as a series of English manuscripts. We
offer the membership in a friendly, enthusiastic and ambitious young
research team, modern facilities and the participation in a new
Collaborative Research Centre.
*Applications**
*Please send your application as a single pdf file per-email to
johannes.spaethe at uni-wuerzburg.de
<mailto:johannes.spaethe at uni-wuerzburg.de>latest until 28th February
2013. Applications should include a cover letter, a short summary of
research interests, CV, complete certificates, and the names (with email
addresses) of two potential referees.
