We have opening for an Assistant Chair in our Neurobiology Department at Northwerstern University. This is an administrative position that reports directly to the department chair and to the Dean's office. The department has 14 faculty positions and the assistant chair interacts regularly with faculty and staff throughout the Department, the College of Arts and Science, and University. We are looking for an outgoing, organized PhD who is interested in administration. Previous assistant chairs have gone on to higher positions in the central administration at Northwestern and elsewhere.

The Department is part of the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences on the Evanston campus of Northwestern. The campus is right on the shores of Lake Michigan, immediately north of Chicago. Some faculty and staff live in Evanston (great schools) and others live in Chicago proper.

Director of Operations and Outreach/Assistant Chair

Northwestern University's Department of Neurobiology seeks a Director of Operations and Outreach/Assistant Chair, the senior administrative leader for the department. In partnership with the Department Chair, the Assistant Chair oversees the areas of graduate education, facilities and space management, safety, human resources, academic program administration, and external relations.

Responsibilities include:

Overseeing facilities management and space utilization, including office and laboratory moves and upgrades. Working closely with the Chair and Associate Dean for Facilities and Planning to ensure strategic use of all available space. Assuring department's routine maintenance is attended to in a timely manner. Coordinating and monitoring renovations, construction projects and related budgets. Developing and implementing processes and procedures related to safety and security. Managing facilities issues pertaining to faculty recruitment, including new faculty set-ups, as well as facilities needs following faculty departures. Overseeing annual space inventory report, tracking capital purchases and other equipment; Hiring, training, managing, and fostering development of staff to provide a service-oriented and collegial department office, with collective responsibilities including but not limited to arranging and facilitating faculty searches and recruitment, seminar speaker visits, tenure promotion packages, and departmental special events; Directing the departmental Master's Degree program, including leading the admissions process and advising, teaching and tracking progress of Master's students; Overseeing departmental budgets as well as participating in strategic financial planning including generation of budget projections and monthly summaries of income and spending in conjunction with the Life Sciences Accounting Office; Drafting grant proposals to meet shared needs for initiatives such as large grant, program project, multi-investigator, and training programs; Performing related duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D., preferably in Neuroscience or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired; at least five years experience working in an academic setting, including, ideally, postdoctoral research and/or administrative experience in an academic research setting; instructional experience, preferably in a classroom setting; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with dept. chair, faculty, students and administrative staff; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to effectively organize and bring projects to completion in a timely manner; excellent problem solving and planning; excellent interpersonal skills; and primary knowledge of research administration policies and protocols.
