POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN STEREO VISION AND 3-D SCENE ANALYSIS.
I’m seeking a post-doc to join in an NSF-funded project on the
psychophysics and computation of stereo vision at Syracuse University. The
project is an investigation of new approaches to disparity coding,
perceived depth, 3-D scene analysis, and attentional selection within 3-D
scenes. It has roots in these papers (which can be found at
http://www.isr.syr.edu/faculty/bfarell/publications.html):
* Farell, B. (1998). Two-dimensional matches from one-dimensional stimulus
components in human stereopsis. Nature, 395, 689-693.
* McKee, S. P., Verghese, P. & Farell, B. (2005). Stereo sensitivity
depends on stereo matching. Journal of Vision, 5, 783-792.
* Farell, B. (2006). Orientation-specific computation in stereoscopic
vision. Journal of Neuroscience, 26, 9098-9106.
* Farell, B., Chai, Y.-C. & Fernandez, J. M. (2009). Projected disparity,
not horizontal disparity, predicts stereo depth of 1-D patterns. Vision
Research, 49, 2209–2216.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Bio-engineering,
Experimental Psychology, or related fields, an interest in perceptual
mechanisms, and either prior experience in vision research (experimentation
or modeling) or a background that would bring non-traditional but
productive approaches to the study of vision.
Curiosity and a strong inclination to ask questions are the essential
qualifications. Facility with programming (Matlab in particular) and
statistics would be helpful. This is an initial one-year position with
possible renewal annually. Starting time is negotiable.
The vision community at Syracuse University and the neighboring SUNY
Upstate Medical University includes psychophysicists, neurophysiologists,
and clinicians. Syracuse is in the middle of New York State; it is
centrally located, being roughly equidistant from Toronto, Montreal,
Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. It is home to gently rolling hills,
maple trees, four distinct seasons, and famous snow and salt
deposits. Ithaca, Rochester, and the Adirondacks are nearby.
Salary is based on NIH scale. Syracuse University is an Equal Opportunity /
Affirmative Action employer. The position is subject to availability of
funds.
To apply, please send a letter describing research interests and
experience, a CV, and letters of reference to bfarell at syr.edu
