The University of Melbourne is a leading international university with a tradition of excellence in teaching and research, and a strong focus on community engagement. In the most recent Excellence in Research Australia evaluation (2012) the Department of Optometry and Vision Science contributed to a rating of 5 in the area of Ophthalmology and Optometry, placing it in the top 5% internationally. The  Faculty of Science has an exciting opportunity for an outstanding candidate with a distinguished international reputation, to promote and lead the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences into the future.

The Chair will lead the ongoing development of the Doctor of Optometry, and will establish and lead an environment that encourages excellence in teaching, learning and research.  He/she will be able to articulate a compelling vision for the future of the discipline, and will be expected to undertake research, teaching, thesis supervision and take a lead role in the Faculty and University Committees. A high level of interpersonal skills and leadership ability are imperative to lead engagement and collaboration across the Department, and in the wider external community, in particular with key stakeholders within the optometric profession. The ideal candidate will seek to identify opportunities to translate research outcomes into the community, to shape and influence government policy, and enhance public understanding. The successful candidate will have received major research grants and have a substantial publication record.
