Two Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Visual Perception of Natural Scenes.
Location: Highfield Campus, University of Southampton, UK
Salary: £27,854 to £30,424
Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date: Monday 01 April 2013
Applications are invited to work on an EPSRC funded project working with Wendy Adams and Erich Graf (Psychology, University of Southampton), James Elder (Computer Science & Engineering, Psychology, York University, Canada) and Julian Leyland (Geography, Southampton). The aims of the project are to develop a database of 3D natural scenes with registered and calibrated stereoscopic colour imagery using a laser range-finder and high dynamic range cameras, analyse the statistical structure of natural scenes and relate this to human perception.
Post 1: Image / Scene analysis & modelling. (Reference: 200513JW-R)
Working primarily with Wendy Adams & James Elder, your initial task will be to generate a database of natural images and scenes. You will take the lead in the joint statistical analysis of 3D range and calibrated colour imagery, providing data to support psychophysical research and computer vision algorithm development.
You will have a PhD in computer or human vision (or equivalent experience), with strong computational skills, including experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++), and experience of image and / or 3D scene analyses.
You must be available to travel within the UK and Canada for the purpose of collating the database, and collaboration. (Fixed term for 33 months).
Post 2: Human Visual Psychophysics & Modelling (Reference: 200313JW_R)
Working with members of the team to develop models of human perception, you will take the lead in designing and conducting psychophysical experiments to understand human visual perception in the context of natural scene statistics.
You will have a PhD in human vision (or equivalent experience), with strong computational skills and experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++). Expertise in image analyses is not an essential requirement of this post. (Fixed term for 30 months).
Psychology at Southampton encompasses a large and diverse group of excellent researchers, and was ranked 8th in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. Whilst Psychology is ambitious and successful, it is also a very friendly and pleasant place to work. You will join a highly motivated and professional team with many opportunities for professional development. Further details about Psychology at Southampton can be obtained from our webpages at http://www.psychology.southampton.ac.uk/.
