me College of Optometrists
funded Research Scholarship based in the Department of
Optometry at City University London. The project, which
commences in October 2002, concerns the ocular adverse
reactions of certain systemic medications. In particular, several
drugs, e.g. cardiac glycosides, phenothiazines, quinolones,
NSAIDs and chemotherapeutic agents, are associated with
significant and selective retinal toxicity.
The project will involve screening patients taking these drugs using
a variety of indices of retinal function including visual acuity, colour
vision assessment, Amsler grid and EOG to determine the
incidence and severity of retinal toxicity, and also to establish any
pre-disposing factors. The second part of the project will involve
retinal cell culture to establish the mechanism of drug toxicity. No
previous experience in cell culture is required, as full training will be
given.
This position is open to a person with a First or Upper Second
Class Honours Degree in Optometry. Applicants must also be
members of the College of Optometrists.
The student bursary is =A310,000 per annum for a period of 3 years.
