Up to 3 lectureships are available to candidates with interests overlap=20
with one of the School=92s broadly defined research areas:
Social and Health Psychology;
Behavioural Neuroscience;
Cognitive Psychology.
The School gained a 5*(A) RAE rating in 2001 and achieved a TQA assessment=
=20
of =91Excellent=92. We expect candidates to demonstrate a record or=
potential=20
of publishing in high-impact journals, and a track record or potential for=
=20
gaining external funding. The size of the School, together with its=20
unparalleled resourcing, means that teaching and administrative duties are=
=20
not heavy. Cardiff University justifiably claims its teaching is=20
research-led and the School of Psychology reflects this philosophy.

The School of Psychology has a complement of up to 45 full-time teaching=20
staff. At present there are 10 Professors, which should soon rise to 12=20
with planned appointments. It also has a number of part-time and temporary=
=20
teaching members, and over 40 research fellows, associates and=20
assistants. It is one of the largest Psychology departments in the UK. In=
=20
addition, there is a substantial technical (13 staff) and secretarial (14=20
staff) support staff. Currently there are around 50 full-time PhD students,=
=20
and 41 D.Clin.Psy students.
The School occupies all 13 floors of the Tower Building and has=20
neighbouring buildings housing specialist laboratories. Of particular note=
=20
are the extensive laboratories for Behavioural Neuroscience, Human Factors,=
=20
Social and Developmental Psychology, Perception (both visual and auditory),=
=20
Health Psychology, Human Electrophysiology and Forensic/Abnormal=20
Psychology. In addition the School has strong established links with local=
=20
Hospitals, mental Health services and prisons.
As with research, the School attained the highest rating of =91Excellent=92=
for=20
its teaching from the HEFCW Teaching Quality Assessment Panel. Each year=20
it admits around 200 FTE students to single honours degrees in either=20
Psychology or Applied Psychology; and to joint honours degrees with=20
Physiology, Education and Criminology. In addition it offers introductory=
=20
modules to first year students not proceeding in Psychology and courses on=
=20
Behavioural Science to medical students. The School also delivers courses=
=20
to students on the Neuroscience and Education degrees. At postgraduate=20
level the School runs two MSc courses (Occupational Psychology with 20=20
students, Education Psychology with 10 students), and with the South Wales=
=20
Clinical Training team based at Whitchurch Hospital, offers a Doctorate in=
=20
Clinical Psychology. It is the only department in the UK to offer all=20
three key applied psychology postgraduate courses.
