Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on a=20
multidisciplinary (Psychology, Engineering and Cartography) EPSRC funded=20
project on the design of tactile maps and map symbols for blind and=20
visually impaired people.  This post starts in February 2003 and will end=20
31 December 2005.

The project involves collaboration with the Department of Geography and the=
=20
Enterprise and Innovation Office of Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) and=
=20
aims to explore ways of designing tactile maps for blind people using a new=
=20
tactile printing process developed at APU.  Dr Simon Ungar has been=20
involved in the project for three years, and two researchers, one=20
cartographer and one engineer, have been employed on the project for two=20
years. Following a successful bid to EPSRC, a second engineer was recently=
=20
appointed and this new research post is now available.

No specific areas of expertise are necessary, but an interest in spatial=20
cognition and/or experience of psychophysical methods would be an=20
advantage.  The willingness and ability to work in a multidisciplinary=20
setting is important.

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Psychology at=20
UniS, and will be responsible for carrying out a series of studies on the=20
tactile perception of raised printed symbols. This will involve working=20
closely with other researchers on the project to inform the design of=20
symbols by the cartographer, and development of the printer by the=20
engineers.  It will be necessary to visit blind participants at their=20
homes, or in schools or colleges.  Other project colleagues are based at=20
APU in Cambridge and therefore some travel to project meetings will be=20
necessary.
