The intent of this meeting is to bring together students and established
investigators with varying levels of expertise and experience to discuss
their research findings, identify areas of common interest and develop
future directions. Invited speakers will present background, raise
important scientific questions and/or discuss their own work in the topic
areas: 1) Photoreceptors/transduction, 2) Inner retinal processing and 3)
Central vision systems. Course participant platform presentations of
15-20 minutes each, chosen from submitted poster abstracts, will also
highlight these topics.

A unique feature of the meeting will be nine workshops: 1) Clinical
assessment-indirect ophthalmoscopy and flourescein angiography, 2)
Histological assessment, 3) Electrophysiology, 4) Genetic manipulation,
5) Genetic mapping/modifiers, 6) Mouse Mutant Resources, 7) Microarray
Experiment Design and Analysis, 8) Proteomics, and 9) Grant writing.
These workshops will include hands-on experiences, protocols, discussion
of data interpretation and/or tours of TJL facilities. Our Down East
Lobster Bake will top off the meeting, with a special keynote address by
Dr. Paul Sieving, Director of NEI, who will discuss the future of Vision
Research.

Postdoctoral and graduate students are encouraged to attend. Twenty
competitive travel stipends will be available to students to make the
meeting more accessible. To apply for the stipend, submit a CV, a letter
stating research interests, a letter of support from a mentor, along with
the registration form to Barbara
Donovan

Attendance by Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities is
encouraged.
Due to its relatively small size and interactive format, this meeting
represents a unique and rare opportunity for established investigators
and students to interact with speakers and other experts in
attendance.

Abstract presentations will be selected to illustrate and examine in more
detail principles developed in the overviews. Deadline for submitting
an abstract is September 13, 2004. If you wish to submit, please
refer to the
Abstract
Submission Guidelines. Submitted abstracts will be considered for
oral or poster presentation. All abstract submissions will be reproduced
and included with the conference notebook material.
